Mod 4 Journal - Meg Gross

Q:  Select a career goal and communicate how their education has prepared them for their chosen career and continual learning after they graduate. A: I think I said it before - my education really hasn't prepped me for the career that I have been doing for 8 years now.  I went in to Network Administration for school but came out a few years later a project manager when I hit the real world.  I was better at talking with people and gaining their trust throughout the different project phases through launching. Post school, I am continually learning on the job of how to be better at my career.  Each failure or setback is a learning opportunity.

What are your personal professional IT strengths (technical and soft skills)? So here is the weird thing about this question…I don’t know that I have my IT strengths in the traditional sense.  Years back I was laid off from the banking / mortgage business and needed a new career to provide for my family.  I went back to OC to get my AA-S in Information Systems with a focus on Cisco Networking / Network management.  I was okay in school, struggled a lot with many concepts…but one thing I was always good at was learning the new concepts and explaining them to people in a non-technical manner and then providing the IT teams their feedback but in technical terms.  Thus, this is why I believe I went in to project management vs. going forward with my Network Engineer career pathway.   What are your professional IT goals? Be  CLEAR (Links to an external site.) , and include at least 1 immediate goal (0-1 year) and 2 long term goals (5-10 years out). In...

What is your internship? describe it as if you had an elevator ride to do it in My internship is centered around the work that I currently do as an Implementation Project Manger for a Global company.  I will be working with various team, resources and vendors to implement new client business and/or specialty IT projects. What do you know about it? I have been a project manager for just under 10 years.  I am aiming to get my PMP in 2023 and my MBA in project management by 2025. What will you need to learn to accomplish it? I don't know that what exactly more I need to learn to accomplish it but I do know that the more practical application I get, the more effective I become. How does it represent your BASIS learning and IT skills? I think that what I do for a living gives me an edge in the BASIS learning program and it is the degree program is what gave the opportunity to break in to this world.
